DESCRIPTION: Length 5 to 7mm. Known as the Bryony Ladybird this species is orange throughout with 11 black spots found on the elytra. The fusion of these spots is very rare and no melanic forms have been recorded. The elytra is covered in short downy hairs and the legs are orange. BEHAVIOUR: Overwinters as an adult in low herbage. This species is strictly found on or near White Bryony. DISTRIBUTION: A recent immigrant first recorded in the UK in 1997. Primarily a southern species but moving slowly northwards. PERIOD: Can be seen all year but best searched for in spring and summer. |
